The traverse table was once used by a crew member in charge of navigation while the captain was busy doing something else. The cardinal points on the upper part were used to mark the direction taken by the ship with a thumbtack or a small nail, and the lower table represents the speed. A very practical tool for when a sailor is not qualified to read the charts or not trusted enough to fill out the logbook. Easy for the captain to interpret afterwards!
